How to overcome loneliness after settling into a new country. Settling into a new country could be an exciting, unforgivable experience. But it could also be lonely, mainly if you make a move alone with no one to share the journey with.
Sometimes moving into a new country and adjusting to a new culture could bring feelings of being out of place and loneliness.
So, to prevent this sadness and loneliness from escalating into a much more serious and dangerous condition like depression.
There are some tips that could help to overcome loneliness after moving into a new country.
Here are 5 tips:
1 – DO NOT PRESSURISE YOURSELF, DO EVERYTHING IN MODERATION
You need to make it easy on yourself and do things at a pace that would allow you to keep them together.
Do not do everything at once, you are not competing or being in a race. Therefore, prioritize the things you have to do. Having a to-do list could be very helpful.
Do most of the work for your settlement, if you can, regarding house decoration, administration and legal things… but you can delegate whenever needed.
2 – PREVENT LONELINESS BY NOT HIDING YOURSELF
You can prevent loneliness in the first place by doing a couple of things. First, do not keep yourself to yourself. So, go out there and meet new people.
Also, do not assume that you do not matter, that no one is interested in you. Please do not wait for people to come to you; go to them when the opportunity presents itself, and engage with them by talking about general topics.
But a word of caution, however, do not overdo it.
3 – JOIN A GROUP, A CLASS
Joining a class or a group is one of the best ways to quickly settle into a new country, meet new people, and therefore make friends.
It is a good idea to join a group which brings people together with a common interest, this would surely increase the chance of developing a significant friendship.
There are classes of languages, classes of exercises, and groups of sports.
4 – WORK ON POSITIVE THINKING
Positive thinking predominantly affects health in a good way. So, having positive thinking is crucial when one is settling into a new country in order not to see evil everywhere.
To implement positive thinking, have a good mindset, and start using positive words when talking. Always start your day with positive affirmation, and have positive self-talk.
Importantly surround yourself with positive-minded people.
5 – CONNECT WITH OTHER EX-PATS
It is essential to connect with other ex-pats. You can do that in different ways. You can connect with other people through blogs, forums, and social networks like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, …
If you cannot do that, you can create an online group on social media. For inspiration, you can create something around your passion or hobby.
